SBOTL 5k Run Is A Runaway Success

The start of the SBOTL 23rd Annual 5K Run For Freedom had the appearance of a stampede.

Nearly 1,300 runners and walkers took part in the SBOTL 23rd Annual 5K Run For Freedom in Antioch on Tuesday, July 4.

Antioch's Daniel Ressler took the Men's Division title, crossing the finish line in 15:58.

The Women's Division victory went to Jodi Meier of Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. with a time of 20:03.

Nearly 1,300 runners and walkers joined in the 23rd annual holiday stampede known as State Bank of the Lakes 5K Run For Freedom
at Poplar Ave. and Cunningham Dr. in Antioch on Tuesday, July 4. Temperatures were in the 60s under brilliant blue skies at the 8:00am starting time.

Hometown entrant Daniel Ressler of Antioch took the Men’s Division title, crossing the finish line in 15:58, bettering the 2016 winning time by nine seconds. Last year’s men’s winner, Will Brewster of Grayslake, had hoped to make this year his fourth consecutive Run for Freedom victory. An untimely injury prevented him from entering the competition, however.

The Women’s Division victory went to Jodi Meier of Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. with a time of 20:03.

The race has become an area tradition preceding the Fourth of July parade down Main St. Competitive runners, casual walkers, and entire families test their endurance on the USATF-certified course that winds through the village streets.

The Run For Freedom supports the “Adopt-A-Package” program which, in turn, supports our overseas troops by sending packages filled with snacks and necessities from home. The Antioch VFW Post 4551 Ladies Auxiliary is instrumental in coordinating the project.
