SBOTL 5K: Brewster Repeats, Girmscheid Takes Women’s

It’s was a clean sweep for Antioch’s friendly rival village to the south, Grayslake!

Will Brewster, 22, and Megan Girmscheid, 16, won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, of the 22nd Annual 5K Run For Freedom at Poplar Ave. and Cunningham Dr. in Antioch on Monday, July 4.

Brewster’s win was his third consecutive victory. He crossed the finish line in 16:07. Girmscheid flew over the finish line at the 19:48 mark of the race.

Temperatures were in the mid-60s under cloudy skies at the 8:00am starting time.

The race has become an area tradition preceding the Fourth of July parade down Main St. Competitive runners, casual walkers, and entire families test their endurance on the USATF-certified course that winds through the village streets.

The Run For Freedom supports the “Adopt-A-Package” program which, in turn, supports our overseas troops by sending packages filled with snacks and necessities from home. The Antioch VFW Post 4551 Ladies Auxiliary is instrumental in coordinating the project.
